Artist Statement
Upon learning of the exam, I knew I wanted to reel it back to my roots. Aaannnd I was also in desperate need of a beach day. So, this past Saturday afternoon I took two buses to my favorite area on the island—Happy Hill. Or, as I creolized and prefer, ‘Mon Kontan’ (‘Mon’ for Hill, and ‘Kontan’ for Happy/Content). I’d dropped near my favorite shop in the area, and chatted with the owner who I haven’t able to see in weeks, before grabbing bottled water making the journey into the fence—the road that’s shaped my mother and her siblings.
