(Creative Writing Assignment) — Guess the FRUIT!

It made no sound. That was, unless it reached, or was almost to maturity. And as a child, spending summers on this very island, my motherland, I wondered how something so small could be so loud. So mighty… Young adult me is amused by the irony.

They usually vary in appearance. However this one, in particular, was small, and round and takté—a Kéyòl word used to refer to someone or something that was freckled, or spotted. I smiled to myself. Mesmerized by the nature of my volcanic island home and her bearings, myself being one amongst many, I drew a finger across its smooth skin. As I took in its beautifully fused hues, of faint orange and yellowish green, I reflected on the other varieties I’ve tried. I wanted to know if it tasted just as good as it looked. Was it just as tangy, and sweet, as the Fransik I would meet, with the arrival of spring, back when I lived in Brooklyn?

enjoyed this piece, and would like to donate to a *self-supporting* caribbean artist & college student? mèsi! :*

also, spoiler ahead!—just incase your eyes wander in anticipation as you read. i know the feeling all too well. 🙂‍↕️
